What you would do
- Feeds, bathes, and helps patients with personal hygiene needs
- Provides indwelling and external catheter care
- Performs enteral tube feedings through gastrostomy or nasogastric tubes
- Takes and records vital signs and reports changes to the team leader
- Helps move, lift, and transfer patients using safe body mechanics
Do you qualify for GS-3 to GS-5?
With experience: For GS-3, you need six months of general experience that shows you can learn nursing assistant work. For GS-4, you need one year of specialized nursing assistant experience or experience in another medical field such as licensed practical nurse or hospital corpsman. For GS-5, you need one year of progressively responsible experience at the GS-4 level.
With education: One year of education above high school with courses related to nursing assistant work, or completion of an intensive nursing assistant training program of less than one year, can qualify you at GS-3. For GS-4, two years of education above high school in nursing care or healthcare can qualify you. For GS-5, a bachelor's degree or a 4-year course of study with 24 semester hours of health care courses can qualify you.
