Who can apply: The public.

This job is open to U.S. citizens, nationals, and those who owe allegiance to the U.S. The announcement says you must be a U.S. citizen to apply.

Experience: You need six months of general work experience that shows you can learn nursing assistant skills, which meets the GS-3 level. For GS-4, you need one year of specialized experience, such as nursing assistant work or a medical job like LPN or health technician. For GS-5, you need one year of progressively responsible experience at the GS-4 level. Your experience must be clear, specific, and verifiable.

Education: One year above high school with courses related to nursing assistant work can qualify you. Completing an intensive nursing assistant course of less than one year that led to certification can also qualify you. For GS-4, two years above high school with nursing or health care courses can qualify you. For GS-5, a bachelor's degree or a four-year program with 24 semester hours of health care courses can qualify you. Education must come from a school accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting body.

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 6 days (November 9, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: You will be rated on how well you meet the qualifications, based on your online questionnaire and your application documents. Your experience and information will be verified, and the agency may check references. Missing information or errors may lower your rating or make you ineligible.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, a security clearance (Other), then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Describe your nursing assistant work clearly, with exact dates and hours per week, because vague entries may not count.
  • If you use education to qualify, include transcripts from accredited schools.
  • Make sure your photo ID is REAL ID compliant, since non-compliant driver's licenses are not accepted for onboarding.
