Who can apply: The public.

This job is open to the public. You must be a U.S. citizen, a U.S. national, or someone who owes allegiance to the United States. Former EDRP participants cannot apply for the loan repayment incentive.

Experience: No experience is required for the Nurse II level, which is the entry grade. To qualify for Nurse III, you need one year of specialized Nurse Practitioner experience equivalent to the Nurse II grade. Experience with inpatient medicine working alongside attending physicians is preferred.

Education: You need a post-master's certificate, a master's degree, or a doctoral degree as a Nurse Practitioner. The nursing school must have been accredited by ACEN or CCNE when you finished. Foreign degrees must be validated by an approved evaluation agency. Applicants who are still completing their education may be tentatively selected but cannot be hired until they finish.

Licenses and certifications:

  • Active, current, full, and unrestricted Nurse Practitioner (APN) license in a U.S. state, territory, or the District of Columbia
  • Full and current basic board certification as a Family, Adult, Adult-Gerontology Primary Care, or Gerontology Nurse Practitioner from ANCC, AANPCB, or another nationally recognized certifying body

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 26 days (November 30, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: You will be rated on how well you meet the qualifications, using the online questionnaire. Your experience and documents will be verified, and the VA may run pre-employment reference checks. Missing required information may lead to an ineligible rating or a lower overall rating.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Your CV must show job titles, duties, month and year dates, hours per week, and education with school name and degree date.
  • If you use education to qualify, attach your transcript and confirm your school is accredited by ACEN or CCNE.
  • If you are a current or former federal employee, attach the correct SF-50 or your application may not be accepted.
