Who can apply: The public.
The job is open to the public, but the 'Who May Apply' line says U.S. citizens. You must provide proof of U.S. citizenship.
Experience: You need at least one full year of professional nursing experience at the GS-9 level or above. It must include coordinating care across providers, clinical assessments, individualized care plans, monitoring outcomes, and educating patients or staff. Experience can be paid or unpaid, including volunteer work.
Education: You need a diploma, associate degree, or bachelor's degree in nursing from a professional nursing program. Your program must be accredited by a recognized accrediting body. A graduate or higher degree also meets the basic requirement. You can instead qualify with a PhD or equivalent doctoral degree from a professional nursing program or related medical science field. Graduates of foreign nursing schools must complete the CGFNS certification program. Current federal employees in the 0610 series employed since September 27, 2017 or earlier may be exempt.
Licenses and certifications:
- Current, active, full, and unrestricted professional nurse license or registration from a U.S. state, D.C., Puerto Rico, or a U.S. territory
- Passed the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX)
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Red Cross or American Heart Association
- CGFNS Certificate if you graduated from a foreign nursing school
Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.
2 Resume and documents
Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.
3 Apply on USAJOBS
Closes tomorrow (November 4, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).
You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.
How they rate you: You will be rated on how well you meet the qualifications, using your resume, supporting documents, and online questionnaire. If your resume or documents show you have inflated your qualifications or experience, you may lose consideration. Missing required documents can make your application incomplete or ineligible.
4 After you apply
In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.
For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.
If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.
Tips for this job:
- Attach your nursing transcripts, because you may be rated ineligible without them
- Attach a copy of your nursing license or certification, or you may be rated ineligible
- Keep your resume to two pages and list hours per week for each job
