Who can apply: The public.

This job is open to the public, but only U.S. citizens, nationals, or those who owe allegiance to the U.S. can apply. You must provide proof of U.S. citizenship.

Experience: You need at least one full year of professional nursing experience at the GS-9 level or above. That experience must include reviewing and evaluating medical data, coordinating discharge planning or case management, providing staff education, and helping develop or improve processes.

Education: A diploma, associate degree, or bachelor's degree in nursing from a professional nursing program can count together with the experience above. A PhD or equivalent doctoral degree from a professional nursing or related medical science program can qualify you on its own. The school must be accredited, and nursing degrees from foreign schools need certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools.

Licenses and certifications:

  • Current, active, full, unrestricted professional nurse license or registration from a U.S. state, D.C., Puerto Rico, or a U.S. territory
  • Passed the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 10 days (November 13, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: Your resume, supporting documents, and online questionnaire answers are reviewed to check if you meet the qualifications. Missing information, errors, or omissions can make you ineligible, and inflated qualifications may remove you from consideration.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, a security clearance (Secret), then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Attach your transcripts or you will be rated ineligible if you qualify through education
  • Attach a copy of your nursing license or BLS certification or you will be rated ineligible
  • Keep your resume to two pages or less and list hours per week for each job
