Who can apply: The public.

The job is open to the public, but only U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, or people who owe allegiance to the U.S. can apply. You must prove U.S. citizenship.

Experience: You need at least 1 full year of professional nursing experience at the GS-9 level or higher. This experience should include managing moderately pediatric cases, doing full pediatric assessments, writing care plans, and teaching families about developmental milestones and preventive health.

Education: You can qualify with a diploma, associate degree, or bachelor's degree in nursing from a professional nursing program, plus the required experience. A graduate degree or higher also meets the basic education rule. Or you can qualify with a PhD or equivalent doctoral degree from a professional nursing or related medical science program. Your school must be accredited by a recognized accrediting body, and foreign nursing degrees need official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (CGFNS). Transcripts are required.

Licenses and certifications:

  • Current, active, full, unrestricted registered nurse (RN) license from a U.S. state, D.C., Puerto Rico, or a U.S. territory
  • Passed the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX)
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Red Cross

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 7 days (November 11, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: Your application is rated on how well you meet the qualifications, using your resume, supporting documents, and online questionnaire. Applications with missing documents can be rated ineligible, and resumes longer than two pages are removed. If your qualifications appear inflated, you may lose consideration.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Attach your transcripts and license copy, or you will be rated ineligible
  • Keep your resume to two pages and show month and year dates and hours per week
  • Describe pediatric assessments, care plans, and family teaching in plain language, without acronyms
