Who can apply: The public.
The job is open to the public, but only U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, or people who owe allegiance to the U.S. may apply. You will need to prove U.S. citizenship.
Experience: You need one or more full years of professional nursing experience. This must include emergency room patient care, coordinating patient care, and giving medications. The work must match the level of a GS-11 nurse.
Education: You need a degree or diploma from an accredited professional nursing program, such as an associate, bachelor's, or higher degree. Foreign nursing degrees need official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools. Education cannot replace experience for this job. Current federal 0610 nurses employed since September 27, 2017 or earlier may be exempt from the degree and license rules if they show proof.
Licenses and certifications:
- Current, active, full, and unrestricted professional nurse license or registration from a U.S. state, D.C., Puerto Rico, or a U.S. territory
- Passed the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX)
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from American Red Cross or American Heart Association (advanced certification does not replace BLS)
Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.
2 Resume and documents
Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.
3 Apply on USAJOBS
Closes in 56 days (December 31, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).
You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.
How they rate you: Your full application package is reviewed after the announcement closes. This includes your resume, supporting documents, and online questionnaire answers, and it is checked against the stated qualifications. Missing information, errors, or claims that appear inflated can lower your rating or remove you from consideration. Veterans and military spouses are considered along with all other candidates.
4 After you apply
In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.
For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.
If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, a security clearance (Secret), then the final offer with your start date.
Tips for this job:
- Show your nursing hours per week and ER, care coordination, and medication duties clearly on your resume.
- Upload your nursing license, BLS card, and transcripts with your application, or you will be rated ineligible.
- Keep your resume to two pages or less, because longer resumes are removed from consideration.
