Who can apply: The public.
The job is open to the public, but only U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, or people who owe allegiance to the United States may apply. You must prove U.S. citizenship if selected.
Experience: You need at least one full year of professional nursing experience at the GS-9 level or higher. That experience must include guiding preventive medicine, helping with occupational health programs, and giving primary nursing care for illness that happens at work. Current federal employees in the 0610 Nurse series employed since September 27, 2017 or earlier are exempt from these requirements.
Education: A diploma, associate degree, or bachelor's degree in nursing from a professional nursing program can qualify you together with experience. A PhD or equivalent doctoral degree from a professional nursing or related medical science program is an alternative path. Degrees must come from an accredited program, and foreign nursing degrees need a CGFNS certification or a qualifying credentials evaluation.
Licenses and certifications:
- Current, active, full, unrestricted professional nurse license or registration from a U.S. state, D.C., Puerto Rico, or a U.S. territory
- Passed the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX)
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification, obtained and maintained
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross, obtained and maintained
- CGFNS Certificate if you graduated from a foreign nursing school
Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.
2 Resume and documents
Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.
3 Apply on USAJOBS
Closes in 2 days (November 5, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).
You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.
How they rate you: Your application package is reviewed after the announcement closes. This includes your resume, supporting documents, and questionnaire answers, to see if you meet the qualification requirements. Missing documents can make your application incomplete, and inflating your qualifications or experience may cost you consideration.
4 After you apply
In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.
For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.
If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, a security clearance (Other), then the final offer with your start date.
Tips for this job:
- Attach a copy of your nursing license or certification, or you will be rated ineligible.
- If you use your education to qualify, attach transcripts from an accredited program.
- Keep your resume to two pages and list the hours per week for each job, with month and year dates.
