Who can apply: The public.

Open to the public, but only U.S. citizens may apply. You must provide proof of U.S. citizenship.

Experience: You need at least 1 full year of professional nursing experience, which matches the GS-9 grade level. The experience must include comprehensive nursing care in a clinical setting, coordinating patient care, and helping providers with procedures.

Education: You need a diploma, associate degree, bachelor's degree, or master's degree from a professional nursing program accredited by a body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Instead of experience, you can complete two and a half years of graduate study toward a PhD or doctoral degree in nursing or a related medical science field. Foreign nursing degrees need certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools.

Licenses and certifications:

  • Current, active, unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license from a U.S. state, D.C., Puerto Rico, or a U.S. territory
  • Passed the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 10 days (November 13, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: Your application is rated on how well you meet the qualifications, using your resume, your questionnaire answers, and your documents. If you overstate your experience or qualifications, you may lose consideration.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, a security clearance (Secret), then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • If you qualify through education, attach your transcripts, or you will be rated ineligible.
  • Keep your resume to two pages and list hours per week for each job.
  • Attach copies of your RN license and BLS certification, or your application may be rated ineligible.
