Who can apply: The public.

The job is open to the public, but you must be a U.S. citizen, a U.S. national, or someone who owes allegiance to the U.S. You will need to prove U.S. citizenship.

Experience: You need at least one full year of professional nursing experience at the GS-9 level or higher. This experience must include giving comprehensive nursing care to medical or surgical patients, giving medications by different routes, and teaching patients. Unpaid and volunteer experience can count, but your resume must clearly describe it.

Education: A diploma, associate degree, or bachelor's degree in nursing from a professional nursing program can be used with the experience requirement. A PhD or equivalent doctoral degree from a professional nursing or related medical science program can also qualify you. The school must be accredited by a recognized accrediting body. Graduates of foreign nursing schools must complete the CGFNS certification program.

Licenses and certifications:

  • Current, active, full, and unrestricted professional nurse license from a U.S. state, D.C., Puerto Rico, or a U.S. territory
  • Passed the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 3 days (November 6, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: Your full application package (resume, supporting documents, and questionnaire) will be reviewed to see if you meet the qualifications. Missing or incorrect documents can make your application incomplete or result in an ineligible rating. If the agency finds that you inflated your experience or qualifications, you may lose consideration.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Your resume must be two pages or less and must list hours per week for each job, or it may be marked incomplete.
  • Attach a copy of your nursing license and BLS card, and attach transcripts if you use your education to qualify, or you may be rated ineligible.
  • Use plain language on your resume and avoid acronyms, because the agency will not guess what your experience means.
