Who can apply: The public.
This job is open to all U.S. citizens and U.S. nationals. Applicants must also be at least 18 years old.
Experience: You need at least one full year of professional nursing experience at the next lower level. For the SV-I level (equivalent to GS-13), you need one year of specialized experience at SV-H or GS-12, in federal service or the equivalent in the private sector. Specialized experience includes occupational health support for security personnel, assisting with fitness for duty and FMLA, and coordinating with healthcare, HR, and managers on medical conditions that affect work.
Education: A graduate or higher degree, bachelor's degree, associate degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing program is required. The school must be accredited by a recognized body when the degree was earned. Graduates of foreign nursing schools need official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools.
Licenses and certifications:
- Passed the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX)
- Current, active, full, and unrestricted professional nurse license or registration from a U.S. state, D.C., Puerto Rico, or a U.S. territory
Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.
2 Resume and documents
Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.
3 Apply on USAJOBS
Closes in 2 days (November 5, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).
You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.
How they rate you: Your resume and supporting documents are rated against the job qualifications and four competencies: medical and nursing knowledge, TSA policy and leave compliance, decisiveness, and oral communication. Trained raters score you against set benchmarks, and you must meet a cut point to be considered, while overstating qualifications or cheating on an assessment can get you removed.
4 After you apply
In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.
For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.
If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, a security clearance (Secret), then the final offer with your start date.
Tips for this job:
- Your resume must show how you meet each requirement, with dates and weekly hours. Copying announcement text will not be enough.
- If you use education to qualify, submit transcripts with your application by the closing date, not only if selected.
- Remember the Competency Accomplishment Record and keep your resume to two pages or less, since the system will not accept a longer one.
