Who can apply: The public.
Only U.S. citizens, nationals, or people who owe allegiance to the U.S. can apply. You must give proof of U.S. citizenship.
Experience: For the lowest grade (GS-7), you need one year of specialized experience, such as taking part in field inspections to collect data on natural resource conditions and public use, or helping senior specialists with habitat inventories and vegetation sampling. For GS-9 and GS-11, you need one year of experience at a higher level, such as applying policies in resource areas or reviewing land use applications and environmental assessments.
Education: One full year of graduate study in a field like biological sciences, agriculture, or natural resource management can qualify you for GS-7. Superior academic achievement can also qualify you for GS-7 if you are in the upper third of your class, have a 3.0 or higher GPA, or belong to an approved honor society. A master's degree or two years of graduate study can qualify you for GS-9, and a Ph.D. or three years of graduate study can qualify you for GS-11. Transcripts are required for education-based qualifications.
Licenses and certifications:
- Valid state driver's license
Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.
2 Resume and documents
Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.
3 Apply on USAJOBS
Closes in 5 days (November 9, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).
You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.
How they rate you: You will be rated on how well you meet the qualifications, based on a review of your resume, supporting documents, and questionnaire answers. Resumes over two pages are removed from consideration, and missing information such as dates or hours per week can make your application incomplete.
4 After you apply
In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.
For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.
If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.
Tips for this job:
- Keep your resume to two pages or less, or it will be removed from consideration.
- For each job, list start and end dates by month and year, plus hours worked per week.
- If you qualify through education, attach your transcripts or you will be rated ineligible.
