Who can apply: The public.
Only U.S. citizens can apply, and you must prove citizenship. Veterans and military spouses are considered along with all other candidates.
Experience: One year of specialized experience at the GS-6 level, which the announcement describes as the next lower grade. It must include testing in a clinical lab, calibrating or maintaining lab instruments, preparing samples, and recording results in lab computer systems.
Education: One full year of graduate-level education directly related to the job, such as clinical laboratory science, chemistry, microbiology, or a related health science. You must attach transcripts. You can also combine education and experience, but the two percentages must add up to at least 100%. Foreign education must be evaluated and found equivalent to a U.S. accredited program.
Licenses and certifications:
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross
Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.
2 Resume and documents
Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.
3 Apply on USAJOBS
Closes in 5 days (November 9, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).
You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.
How they rate you: Once the announcement closes, your resume, supporting documents, and questionnaire answers are reviewed to see if you meet the qualification requirements. If your resume or documents show you have inflated your qualifications or experience, you may lose consideration.
4 After you apply
In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.
For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.
If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.
Tips for this job:
- Your resume must be two pages or less and list hours per week for each job, or your application may be marked incomplete.
- If you qualify through education, attach transcripts from accredited schools, or you will be rated ineligible.
- Describe your lab work in plain words: testing, calibrating instruments, preparing samples, and recording results in lab systems.
