Who can apply: The public.
Only U.S. citizens, nationals, or people who owe allegiance to the U.S. can apply, and you must prove citizenship. Veterans and military spouses are considered along with all other candidates.
Experience: One year of specialized experience, which is work typical of a GS-4 job: greeting patients in person or by phone, gathering patient information to check eligibility for care, and keeping patient treatment files. Volunteer and unpaid experience also counts.
Education: Four years of education above high school from an accredited business, secretarial, or technical school, junior college, college, or university. You can also combine education and experience, but the total must reach at least 100 percent. Foreign education must be evaluated by a recognized private organization or given full credit by a U.S. accredited school.
Licenses and certifications:
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross
Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.
2 Resume and documents
Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.
3 Apply on USAJOBS
Closes in 17 days (November 16, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).
You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.
How they rate you: Your full application package, including your resume, supporting documents, and questionnaire answers, is reviewed to check if you meet the qualifications. If you inflate your qualifications or make errors or leave out required information, you may lose consideration or be rated ineligible.
4 After you apply
In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.
For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.
If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.
Tips for this job:
- Your resume must be two pages or less, or it will be removed, and it must list hours worked per week for each job.
- If you qualify through education, attach official transcripts from accredited schools or your application will be rated ineligible.
- Plan to prove the 40 words per minute typing test and get a BLS certification, since advanced certifications like ALS do not replace it.
