Who can apply: The public, Internal to an agency.

The job is open to the public and to current federal employees of the hiring agency. The open-to section lists U.S. citizens, nationals, and people who owe allegiance to the U.S., but the conditions say you must be a U.S. citizen to apply. Veterans' preference does not apply to this job, though veterans are encouraged to apply.

Experience: You need one year of experience at the GS-05 level, such as clinic or hospital scheduling of a high volume of appointments, customer service, or other clinic work with many contacts. You also need six months of clerical, office, customer service, or other administrative work. The job is GS-06.

Education: A high school diploma, a GED, or a proficiency certificate from a state or territorial board or department of education can qualify you. Education cannot replace experience at this grade.

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 14 days (November 17, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

Applicants may be referred for consideration before the closing date, so applying early is wise.

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: You will be rated on how well you meet the qualifications. Eligible applications are referred in this order: current permanent VA employees of the facility, other VA employees, then all other applicants. Missing required information may lower your rating or make you ineligible.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Make your long-form resume or CV specific, with dates and hours per week for each clinic or scheduling job, because the agency will verify it.
  • If you are a current or former federal employee, include your SF-50 and do not send an award SF-50.
  • The overview says telework is eligible, but the duties section says telework is not authorized, so ask the contact, Dennis Lloyd, to confirm.
