1 Check you can apply You are here

Who can apply: The public.

The announcement is open to U.S. citizens, nationals, and people who owe allegiance to the U.S. The agency says it is open to all U.S. citizens and veterans, and you must be a U.S. citizen to apply.

Experience: Six months of experience that shows you can do or understand the work qualifies you for the entry level (GS-3). For GS-4, you need six months as a sterile processing technician, operating room or surgical technician, or similar clinical sterile processing work. For GS-5 and GS-6, you need one year of experience at the next lower grade, and the announcement prefers one year in sterile processing.

Education: One year of education above high school with at least 6 semester hours in health care courses, such as sterile processing, nursing assistant, hospital corpsman, or operating room and surgical technician courses, or other related courses. For GS-4, two years above high school with at least 12 semester hours in related courses. For GS-5, four academic years above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with 12 related semester hours, or a bachelor's degree. Education can be combined with experience, and it must come from accredited schools. Foreign education must be evaluated by a private credential service.

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 5 days (November 9, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: You will be rated on how well you meet the qualifications, based on your questionnaire and documents. Your application, resume, and supporting documents will be verified, and errors or missing information may lower your rating or affect your consideration.

Apply on USAJOBS ↗
4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Describe your sterile processing work with dates, hours per week, and specific tasks, because the agency will not assume experience.
  • The 2-page resume limit does not apply to this job.
  • If you use education to qualify, send transcripts from accredited schools only.
  • Complete the full questionnaire and submit all required documents by 11:59 PM ET on 11/09/2026.
