Who can apply: The public.

This job is open to all U.S. citizens, nationals, and those who owe allegiance to the U.S. You must be a U.S. citizen to apply.

Experience: One year of experience that shows knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, and health records. Six months of that year must involve work like MRT HIT duties. This experience can qualify you for GS-4 through GS-7, with GS-5 requiring one year of experience at the next lower level, and GS-6 and GS-7 requiring more responsibility as the grade goes up.

Education: An associate's degree in health information technology or health information management, or a related degree with at least 12 semester hours in health information technology or health information management. For GS-5, a bachelor's degree in health information management, or a related degree with at least 24 semester hours, can qualify. Education can also be combined with experience. Degrees must come from schools recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closed (October 30, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

This job will close when 50 applications are received, which may happen before the closing date of 10/30/2026 at 11:59 PM ET.

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: You will be rated on how well you meet the qualifications listed in the announcement. Your application, resume, and supporting documents will be checked, and errors or missing information may lower your rating or affect your eligibility.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, a security clearance (Other), then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Your resume must clearly show your dates and hours of experience and the medical terminology or health record work you did, since the agency will verify it
  • Send a transcript if you use education to qualify, and include the degree and semester hours
  • Apply early because the job may close after 50 applications, before the closing date
