Who can apply: The public.

The job is open to the public, but you must be a U.S. citizen, a national, or someone who owes allegiance to the U.S. Current permanent VA employees at the facility are considered first, then other VA employees, then all other applicants.

Experience: You need one year of experience that shows knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, medical coding, and how health records are structured. Because this is a GS-9 level job, the announcement also accepts one year of experience at the journey level of a medical records coder, or clinical experience (such as RN, MD, or DO) plus one year of clinical documentation improvement experience.

Education: An associate's degree in health information technology or health information management, or a related degree with at least 12 semester hours in those fields, can qualify you. An AHIMA-approved coding program or a similar intense coding training program of about one year or more can also qualify you. Education can be combined with experience. Only degrees from schools accredited by a U.S. Department of Education-recognized accreditor count.

Licenses and certifications:

  • At this level, you must have either a mastery-level certification (AHIMA or AAPC) or a Clinical Documentation Improvement certification (AHIMA or ACDIS)

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 9 days (November 12, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: You will be rated on how well you meet the listed qualifications. Your application and documents will be verified, and errors or missing information may lower your rating or make you ineligible.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Your resume must show the month and year for each job, plus hours worked per week and the series and grade.
  • If you use education to qualify, upload your transcript with your application.
  • Upload your professional certification, which is required, and submit everything by 11:59 PM ET on 11/12/2026.
