Who can apply: The public.

This job is open to the public. The conditions of employment say you must be a U.S. citizen to apply, although the open-to section also mentions nationals and people who owe allegiance to the U.S.

Experience: To reach GS-9, you need one year of experience equal to the GS-08 level of a Medical Records Technician (Coder), plus a mastery-level or clinical documentation improvement certification. Other GS-9 paths include clinical experience such as RN, M.D., or DO with one year of clinical documentation improvement work.

Education: For the basic level, an associate's degree in health information technology or health information management, or a related degree with at least 12 semester hours in those subjects, can qualify. Completing an AHIMA approved coding program or a coding training program of about one year or more can also qualify. At GS-9, an associate's degree or higher can be combined with three years of clinical documentation improvement experience.

Licenses and certifications:

  • Mastery-level coding certification such as CCS, CCS-P, RHIT, RHIA, CPC, COC, or CIC, required at GS-9
  • Clinical documentation improvement certification such as CDIP or CCDS, accepted as an alternative at GS-9

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes tomorrow (November 4, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: You will be rated on how well you meet the qualifications listed. Your application, resume, and supporting documents will be verified, and errors or missing information may result in an ineligible rating or a lower overall rating.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • If using education to qualify, send only degrees from schools accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accreditor, with a transcript.
  • Describe your coding and documentation work clearly, with dates and specific duties, because your experience will be verified.
  • Make sure your identification is REAL ID compliant, since non-REAL ID driver's licenses are not accepted for onboarding.
