Who can apply: The public.

This job is open to the public, but you must be a U.S. citizen, national, or someone who owes allegiance to the U.S. Non-citizens may only be hired if qualified citizens cannot be found.

Experience: For the GS-6 level, you need 1 year of experience equivalent to GS-5 level, and phlebotomy experience is preferred. For GS-5, no experience beyond the basic requirements is needed. The announcement does not describe the exact type of qualifying work.

Education: You must meet the education requirements for MLT certification. The announcement does not name a specific degree. Transcripts must be sent if you use education to qualify.

Licenses and certifications:

  • Current MLT certification from ASCP Board of Certification or ASCP Board of Registry, American Medical Technologists, or American Association of Bioanalysts

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 35 days (December 1, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

This is an open continuous announcement, with certificates issued weekly until all positions are filled, so it may close before 12/01/2026.

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: You will be rated on how well you meet the qualifications. The VA will verify your application, resume, and supporting documents, and will not assume any experience you do not clearly describe. Missing information or errors may lead to an ineligible rating or lower overall score.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Use the standard VA Clinical Resume for the two-page Resume field, and upload your full resume to the 'Other' field
  • Include a transcript if you use education to qualify or do not yet have MLT certification
  • Describe your experience clearly and specifically, since the VA will not assume anything about your work history
