1 Check you can apply You are here
Who can apply: The public.
Open to the public, but only U.S. citizens can apply. Retired military members must follow federal rules if hired within 180 days of retirement.
Experience: No set number of years is required. You must show through paid or unpaid experience and training that you have the knowledge and skill to do the job, and quality of experience matters more than length of time. The announcement does not name a specific grade level for experience.
Licenses and certifications:
- Current valid U.S. driver's license
- Valid government driver's license (government provides training)
Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.
2 Resume and documents
Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.
3 Apply on USAJOBS
Closes in 2 days (November 6, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).
You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.
How they rate you: Applicants must score at least 2 points on the screen-out element, which is the ability to supervise trades, including work planning, emergency response, administrative duties for utilities, and basic trade knowledge, or they are found ineligible. Your resume and supporting documents are rated, and inflated claims can make you ineligible. Incomplete packages or missing information can also lead to an ineligible rating. Qualified applicants go to the hiring manager, who may interview them.
4 After you apply
In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.
For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.
If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.
Tips for this job:
- Email your resume to Ross Hamilton at hamilton.w.ross.civ@usmc.mil, since fax applications are not considered.
- Make sure your resume lists dates, hours per week, and pay plan, series, and grade for federal jobs, and stays within 2 pages.
- If you claim education, a license, or veterans' preference, attach the matching transcripts, license copies, or DD-214 with your application.
