Who can apply: The public.
The job is open to U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, and people who owe allegiance to the United States. Veterans and military spouses are considered with all other candidates.
Experience: There is no set number of years required. You must show, through your resume, that you can do the work without more than normal supervision. This includes carpentry, plumbing, masonry, welding, sheet metal, painting, roofing, and operating dump trucks, excavators, backhoes, front-end loaders and bulldozers. The announcement does not name a grade level for this experience.
Education: The announcement does not list a required degree. If you use school education to qualify, the school must be accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Foreign education needs a formal evaluation showing it is equal to a U.S. accredited program.
Licenses and certifications:
- Corps of Engineers licenses, such as dump truck, truck and trailer, crane, forklift and construction equipment (must be able to obtain)
- Corps of Engineers motorboat operator's license (must obtain and maintain)
- Valid State motor vehicle operator's license (required before appointment)
- State sewage treatment plant operator's license (may be required)
- State water treatment plant operator's license (may be required)
- Job-related license or certification (copy must be submitted with your application)
Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.
2 Resume and documents
Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.
3 Apply on USAJOBS
Closes in 6 days (November 9, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).
You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.
How they rate you: Your application package (resume, supporting documents and questionnaire responses) is reviewed to see if you meet the qualifications. You are rated ineligible if you do not meet the screen-out element, which is the ability to do the work without more than normal supervision. Applications missing required information or documents may not be considered, and inflated qualifications can lead to removal from consideration.
4 After you apply
In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.
For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.
If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.
Tips for this job:
- Your resume must be two pages or less and show month and year dates and hours per week for each job.
- Attach a copy of your required license or certification, or you will be rated ineligible.
- If you use school education to qualify, include transcripts from an accredited school.
