Who can apply: Career transition (CTAP, ICTAP, RPL), The public.
The job is open to the public, but you must be a U.S. citizen, national, or someone who owes allegiance to the U.S. Current or former federal employees whose job or agency was eliminated may get priority under career transition rules (CTAP or ICTAP).
Experience: You need 1 year of full-time specialized experience at the GS-12 level. This means reviewing technical documents such as permit applications and technical reports, assessing geological suitability of underground water sites, and analyzing well logs, tests, or well integrity.
Education: You can qualify through education in one of three paths. Life scientist: a bachelor's or higher degree in biology, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or a related field. Environmental engineer: a professional engineering degree, or other engineering paths that include professional registration, passing the Engineer-in-Training exam, 60 semester hours of science and engineering courses, or an engineering technology degree plus 1 year of engineering experience. Physical scientist: a bachelor's or higher degree in physical science, engineering, or math that includes 24 semester hours in physical science or related engineering science.
Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.
2 Resume and documents
Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.
3 Apply on USAJOBS
Closes tomorrow (November 4, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).
You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.
How they rate you: Subject matter experts review your resume against the critical competencies and rank you as Best Qualified, Well Qualified, or Qualified. Veterans' preference is applied after assessment, and you may face extra tests such as a writing sample or interview. Using a consultant or AI tool on any assessment can get you removed from consideration.
4 After you apply
In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.
For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.
If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.
Tips for this job:
- Include exact dates in MM/DD/YY format for each job, or your experience may not count.
- Keep your resume to 2 pages or less. A longer resume alone can make you ineligible.
- Describe your permit review, well log, or underground water site work with specific details, since reviewers will not assume experience.
