Who can apply: The public.

The job is open to the public. The announcement says you must be a U.S. citizen to apply, but it also says non-citizens may be appointed when qualified citizens cannot be recruited.

Experience: GS-4 requires 6 months of experience as an LPN or LVN, or one year of nursing care work after graduating from an approved school. GS-5 requires one year of experience at the GS-4 level. GS-6 requires one year of experience at the GS-5 level. GS-3 requires no experience beyond the basic requirements.

Education: You can qualify by graduating from an approved practical or vocational nursing school. The school must be approved by the state or accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) when you finished. Graduation from a program of at least 24 months also meets the GS-4 requirement. Some military health training may count if the state licensing body accepts it.

Licenses and certifications:

  • Full, active, current and unrestricted LPN or LVN license in a U.S. state, territory, Puerto Rico or the District of Columbia

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 27 days (November 30, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

This is an open continuous announcement. The first cut-off date for referring eligible applications is November 9, 2026, and later eligible applications will be referred at regular intervals.

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: You are rated on how well you meet the qualifications listed in the announcement. Your application, resume and supporting documents will be verified, and errors or missing information may lower your rating or make you ineligible.

Apply on USAJOBS ↗
4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Include dates, hours per week and duties for every job on your resume, since missing details can lower your rating.
  • Send a transcript if you use your nursing school to meet the education requirement.
  • Confirm your LPN or LVN license is full, active and unrestricted before you apply, because you cannot be hired until all requirements are met.
