Who can apply: The public.

The job is open to the public. The conditions of employment say you must be a U.S. citizen to apply, and veterans' preference does not apply to this announcement.

Experience: Six months of work as an LPN or LVN qualifies you for GS-4. Higher levels need one year of experience at the level just below, and nursing in long-term care is preferred.

Education: You must graduate from a practical or vocational nursing school approved by the state or accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission. Military health training that the state licensing body accepts for full LPN or LVN licensure may also count. For GS-4, graduating from an approved program of at least 24 months can qualify instead of experience.

Licenses and certifications:

  • Full, active, current, and unrestricted LPN or LVN license in a U.S. state, territory, Puerto Rico, or D.C.

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 49 days (December 22, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

This is an open continuous announcement that will be considered on a rolling basis until all vacancies are filled, so it may close once enough people are selected.

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: You are rated on how well you meet the qualifications, based on your application, resume or CV, and supporting documents, which will be verified. Errors or missing information may lower your rating or affect your eligibility, and pre-employment reference checks may be done.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Make sure your LPN or LVN license is full, active, current, and unrestricted, and include a copy.
  • Make your resume or CV specific about dates and nursing duties, because the agency will not assume your experience.
  • Include your nursing school transcript, since your education is needed to qualify.
