Who can apply: The public, Internal to an agency.

The job is open to the public and to current federal employees of the hiring agency. The conditions say you must be a U.S. citizen to apply, and current permanent employees of the Detroit VA Medical Center and its outpatient centers get first consideration.

Experience: Six months as an LPN or LVN qualifies you for GS-4. GS-5 requires at least one year of experience at the GS-4 level or equivalent, and GS-6 requires one more year at the GS-5 level.

Education: You must be a graduate of a practical or vocational nursing school approved by the state or accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) when you finished. For GS-4, graduating from an approved school plus one year of nursing care work, or from a program of at least 24 months, can also qualify you.

Licenses and certifications:

  • Full, active, current, and unrestricted LPN or LVN license in a U.S. state, territory, Puerto Rico, or the District of Columbia

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 2 days (November 6, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: You are rated on how well you meet the qualifications, based on your application, resume, and supporting documents, which will be verified. Errors or missing information may make you ineligible or lower your rating.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Complete the online occupational questionnaire and upload all documents before the 11:59 PM ET deadline, since the agency says that is your responsibility.
  • Use a long-form resume or CV with clear, specific details about your LPN work, because the VA will verify it and will not assume anything.
  • If you use education to qualify, send an official transcript from a school whose accreditation is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
