Who can apply: The public.

The job is open to the public, but the announcement says you must be a U.S. citizen to apply. Selective Service registration is required for men born after 12/31/1959.

Experience: For GS-3, no experience is needed beyond the basic requirements. For GS-4, you need 6 months of experience as an LPN or LVN, or graduation from an approved school plus 1 year of nursing care work, or graduation from an approved school of at least 24 months. GS-5 requires 1 year at GS-4, and GS-6 requires 1 more year at GS-5.

Education: You must be a graduate of a practical nursing program approved by a state accrediting agency or the National League for Nursing. Graduation from an approved school of at least 24 months can qualify you for GS-4. Education must come from a school recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Foreign education needs a Certificate of Foreign Equivalency.

Licenses and certifications:

  • Full, current, active, and unrestricted license as a licensed practical nurse in a U.S. state, territory, Puerto Rico, or the District of Columbia

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 3 days (November 6, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: You will be rated on how well you meet the qualifications, based on your questionnaire, resume, and supporting documents. Your application and documents will be verified, and errors or missing information may result in an ineligible rating or a lower rating.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, a security clearance (Other), then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • The agency says the 2-page resume requirement does not apply here, so a long-form resume or CV is expected.
  • If you use your nursing school to qualify, upload your transcript and confirm your school is accredited by a recognized body.
  • Describe your LPN or nursing care work clearly with dates and hours, because the agency will not assume your experience.
