Who can apply: The public.

The job is open to all U.S. citizens. Applications are referred in this order: current permanent VA employees at this facility, other VA employees, current permanent federal employees of other agencies, then all other applicants.

Experience: To reach GS-6, you need 1 year of qualifying experience at the GS-5 level, which itself requires 1 year at GS-4. GS-4 can be met with 6 months of experience as an LPN or LVN, or with graduation from an approved school plus 1 year of nursing care work in a hospital, clinic, nursing home, or similar facility.

Education: You must be a graduate of a practical or vocational nursing school approved by the state or accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) when you finished the program. The school must be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

Licenses and certifications:

  • Full, active, current and unrestricted license as a practical or vocational nurse in a U.S. state, territory, Puerto Rico, or the District of Columbia
  • Past license revocation, suspension, denial, or restriction may limit appointment

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 83 days (January 25, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: You are rated on how well you meet the qualifications, based on your application, resume, and supporting documents. Your experience must be clear and specific, because the agency does not assume experience. Errors or missing required information may lower your rating or make you ineligible.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, a security clearance (Other), then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Upload the standard VA one-page Clinical Resume unmodified into the two-page Resume field.
  • List any long-term care or geriatric experience, since at least 1 year is preferred.
  • Include a transcript if you use your nursing education to qualify, and confirm your license is full, active and unrestricted.
