Who can apply: Career transition (CTAP, ICTAP, RPL), The public.
The job is open to the public, but the agency's clarification says only U.S. citizens may apply. Federal employees eligible under career transition programs (CTAP or ICTAP) get selection priority, and applicants eligible under merit staffing may also apply.
Experience: For GS-9, you need 1 year of specialized experience at the GS-7 level in federal service, such as helping with legal automation systems and fixing recurring software and hardware problems. For GS-11 and GS-12, you need 1 year of similar work at the level below, such as using litigation support software to organize case files and preparing trial presentations.
Education: For GS-9, a master's or equivalent graduate degree, 2 full years of progressively higher graduate study, or a J.D. or LL.B. can qualify you if it is in a related field such as Criminal Justice, Computer Science, Law or IT. For GS-11, a Ph.D., 3 full years of graduate study, or an LL.M. can qualify you. A combination of experience and graduate education can also be used. The GS-12 level lists only the experience option. Education must come from an accredited college or university.
Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.
2 Resume and documents
Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.
3 Apply on USAJOBS
Closes in 8 days (November 12, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).
You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.
How they rate you: Your resume and supporting documents are checked against the qualifications and then rated as Best Qualified, Highly Qualified or Qualified. You also complete an online questionnaire and a USA Hire online assessment that measures 12 competencies. Rating yourself higher than your documents support, overstating your experience, or cheating on the assessment can get you removed.
4 After you apply
In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.
For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.
If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, a security clearance (Top Secret), then the final offer with your start date.
Tips for this job:
- Keep your resume to two pages or less, because longer resumes make you ineligible.
- Include month, day and year for every job start and end date on your resume.
- If you qualify through education, attach an unofficial transcript and any foreign education evaluation with your application.
