Who can apply: The public.
The job is open to the public, but you must be a U.S. citizen or national, and the agency clarifies that means all U.S. citizens. The job is also open to applicants eligible under Merit Staffing procedures, announcement 27-LAW-13094307-MS.
Experience: You need one full year of specialized experience at the GS-5 level, in federal or private or public sector work. Specialized experience means preparing and managing electronic case materials in a legal setting, routine litigation support, extracting case files with software, and general administrative and customer support.
Education: One full year of graduate education in a related field, such as criminal justice, law or information technology, leading to a master's degree or higher. You can also combine graduate education with experience. Superior Academic Achievement is another option: a bachelor's degree, or finishing one within 9 months, plus a qualifying GPA, top-third class standing, or honor society membership. All degrees and coursework must come from an accredited college or university. Education cannot replace experience at this grade.
Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.
2 Resume and documents
Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.
3 Apply on USAJOBS
Closes in 9 days (November 12, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).
You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.
How they rate you: Your resume and supporting documents are checked against the minimum qualifications, then compared with your questionnaire answers. You also take the USA Hire online assessment, which measures competencies such as attention to detail, customer service and teamwork. Overstating your experience or cheating on the assessment may get you removed from consideration.
4 After you apply
In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.
For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.
If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.
Tips for this job:
- Keep your resume to two pages or less, since a longer resume means you will not be considered.
- Include the month, day and year for every start and end date in your work history.
- Set aside at least 3 hours for the USA Hire assessment and complete it within 48 hours after the announcement closes.
