Who can apply: Career transition (CTAP, ICTAP, RPL), The public.

This job is open to U.S. citizens or nationals only. Current federal employees who are eligible under the CTAP or ICTAP career transition programs get selection priority if they meet the requirements.

Experience: For GS-7, you need one full year of specialized experience at the GS-5 level or higher in federal service, such as legal and administrative support for attorneys, discovery preparation, and file maintenance. For GS-9, you need one full year of specialized experience at the GS-7 level or higher, such as legal document work, discovery, trial preparation, and training on legal software.

Education: Graduate study in a related field, such as criminal justice, computer science, law, or IT, can qualify you. For GS-7, you can use one full year of graduate study (18 semester hours) or a bachelor's degree with superior academic achievement, such as a 3.0 GPA or higher, standing in the top third of your class, or membership in a national honor society. For GS-9, you need a master's or equivalent graduate degree, or two full years of progressively higher graduate study. Degrees and coursework must come from accredited schools, and foreign degrees need an evaluation showing they are comparable to U.S. schools.

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes tomorrow (November 2, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: Your resume and supporting documents are checked for minimum qualifications, then compared to your online questionnaire answers. You must also complete the USA Hire online assessment, which rates 12 competencies such as attention to detail and teamwork. Overstating your experience or cheating on the assessment may remove you from consideration, and qualified applicants are rated Best Qualified, Highly Qualified, or Qualified.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, a security clearance (Other), then the final offer with your start date.

  • Include the month, day, and year for every start and end date in your work history.
  • Complete the USA Hire online assessment within 48 hours after the announcement closes.
