Who can apply: The public, Native Americans.

Open to the public, but limited to U.S. citizens, nationals, or people who owe allegiance to the U.S. The IHS must give absolute preference to qualified applicants who meet the Interior Department's definition of Indian, and Native Americans with a tribal affiliation are listed as eligible.

Experience: You need at least 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-08 in federal service, or in the private or public sector. The work must include x-ray and CT duties, managing daily systems operations, assigning work to staff, and keeping accurate imaging records.

Education: Completing an accredited radiologic technology program, plus certification as a radiographer, can meet the basic requirement. Only degrees and attendance from schools accredited by U.S. Department of Education-recognized bodies count. Foreign education needs a Certificate of Foreign Equivalency.

Licenses and certifications:

  • Certification as a radiographer through the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) general radiology registry
  • ARRT Computed Tomography (CT) credential, in addition to the general radiology registry (required selective factor)

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 24 days (November 27, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: You are rated on your resume, questionnaire answers, and USA Hire Assessment results, which are not pass or fail. Assessments measure competencies such as attention to detail, decision making, flexibility, and teamwork. Overstating experience or cheating on an assessment can get you removed from consideration.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, a security clearance (Other), then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Your resume must list duties and total hours per week for each job, or that experience may not count.
  • Complete background investigation forms quickly; you have 5 calendar days after receiving instructions.
  • If claiming Indian preference, submit a signed and dated Form BIA-4432 with your application.
