Who can apply: Career transition (CTAP, ICTAP, RPL), The public.

Only U.S. citizens, nationals, or people who owe allegiance to the U.S. can apply. The announcement also gives priority to certain current or former federal employees, including DHS employees in the Career Transition Assistance Plan, people on the Reemployment Priority List, and Interagency Career Transition Assistance Plan eligibles.

Experience: You need 1 year of specialized experience at least equal to the next lower grade level (GS-8). The work must be like researching investigative and intelligence information, using national databases to determine identity, alienage (non-citizen status), and removability, analyzing data to make accurate status decisions, or doing quick database research for tactical decisions. Volunteer and unpaid experience also counts.

Education: A Master's degree, two full years of graduate education, or a J.D. or LL.B. law degree can replace the required experience. The education must show the knowledge, skills, and abilities needed for the work. Your school can tell you how many credit hours make up two years of graduate education; if it cannot, use 36 semester or 54 quarter hours. Post-high school education can also be combined with experience to meet the requirement.

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 2 days (November 5, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: You will be rated on your resume, your questionnaire answers, and your online USA Hire assessment, which measures competencies such as attention to detail, reasoning, and stress tolerance. You will be placed in one of three groups: Highly Qualified, Well-Qualified, or Qualified. Overstating your experience or cheating on the assessment can get you removed from consideration.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.

  • Your resume must clearly show how you meet the experience requirement, or you will be found ineligible.
  • Keep your resume to two pages or less, and include dates in MM/DD/YY format and hours worked per week for each job.
  • Set aside at least 3 hours to complete the USA Hire assessments, and finish them within the deadline in your notice.
