Who can apply: The public.
Open to the public, but only U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, or people who owe allegiance to the U.S. may apply. You must provide proof of U.S. citizenship.
Experience: You need one year of specialized experience (experience doing the core tasks of this job) at the GS-9 level in the federal service. It must include conducting boundary, geodetic, or topographic surveys using GPS and GIS, processing survey data with CAD or GIS software to make plats, maps, and legal descriptions, and researching land records or reviewing contractor survey work for accuracy. Paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work, counts.
Education: You can qualify with a bachelor's degree in land surveying, or in civil engineering with a surveying option. The civil engineering degree must include at least 6 semester hours of surveying, 3 of land law, and 21 more in related surveying and mapping subjects. You can also qualify with a combination of related courses and experience, or with a current state land surveyor registration obtained by written exam. Foreign education must be evaluated as equivalent to a U.S. accredited program.
Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.
2 Resume and documents
Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.
3 Apply on USAJOBS
Closes in 5 days (November 9, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).
You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.
How they rate you: You are rated on how well your resume, questionnaire answers, and supporting documents meet the listed qualifications. Resumes over two pages are removed from consideration, and incomplete packages are marked ineligible. If your qualifications appear inflated, you may lose consideration.
4 After you apply
In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.
For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.
If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, a security clearance (Other), then the final offer with your start date.
Tips for this job:
- Keep your resume to two pages and show month and year dates plus hours per week for each job, or your application may be incomplete
- If you qualify through education, upload official transcripts with your application or you will be rated ineligible
- Describe your surveying work using the listed tasks, such as GPS surveys, CAD or GIS processing, and reviewing contractor survey accuracy, and avoid unexplained acronyms
