Who can apply: The public.

Only U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, or people who owe allegiance to the United States can apply. The job is open to the public.

Experience: You need one year of specialized experience at the GS-11 level, the next lower grade. This means developing architect-engineer contracts or task orders for civil works projects, or applying engineering design knowledge to civil works projects by developing and coordinating plans and specifications. Your resume must describe this experience in detail.

Education: A bachelor's degree in engineering from a program accredited by ABET, or a degree with calculus and advanced science or engineering courses in five of seven listed areas, can qualify for engineering jobs. Architect applicants need a bachelor's degree in architecture or a related field with specific course hours. Education cannot replace experience at this grade.

Licenses and certifications:

  • Current state Professional Engineer (PE) or Professional Architect license or registration
  • Valid state driver's license from one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 13 days (November 16, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: Your application package, including your resume, questionnaire answers, and supporting documents, is reviewed to check whether you meet the qualification requirements. Incomplete packages, missing transcripts or license proof, and resumes longer than two pages can lead to removal or an ineligible rating, and inflated qualifications can cost you consideration.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Attach proof of your PE or Professional Architect license with your application, or you will be rated ineligible.
  • Describe your civil works contract or task order work in detail on your resume, including hours per week.
  • If you qualify through education, attach transcripts from accredited schools, and keep your resume to two pages or less.
