Who can apply: The public.
Open to the public, but you must be a U.S. citizen, national, or someone who owes allegiance to the U.S. Military retirees may not be appointed to a DoD civilian job within 180 days after retiring, unless an exception applies.
Experience: Applicants need one year of specialized experience at the GS-11 level, such as inspecting construction sites, tracking schedules and budgets, and doing safety inspections. For GS-12, you need one year of specialized experience such as managing construction contracts, checking plans against site conditions, and creating and enforcing construction safety plans.
Education: A bachelor's degree in engineering from a program accredited by ABET, or another accepted path such as professional registration (EI, EIT, or PE) or passing the FE exam. Education cannot replace experience at this grade (GS-12).
Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.
2 Resume and documents
Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.
3 Apply on USAJOBS
Closes in 8 days (November 12, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).
You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.
How they rate you: Your full application package, including your resume, supporting documents, and questionnaire answers, is reviewed to see if you meet the qualifications. If it is found that you have inflated your qualifications or experience, you may lose consideration, and errors or missing information may affect your eligibility.
4 After you apply
In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.
For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.
If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.
Tips for this job:
- Your resume must be two pages or less and must show hours per week for each job, or your application may be marked incomplete.
- If you qualify through education, you must upload your transcripts, or your education will not be counted.
- Use plain language and avoid acronyms on your resume, because the agency will not assume what your experience means.
