Who can apply: The public.
Only U.S. citizens, nationals, or people who owe allegiance to the U.S. may apply. The agency clarified that the job is open to all U.S. citizens.
Experience: You need one year of specialized experience at the GS-12 level, which is the grade just below this job. It must include providing technical support for preparing and administering contracts or task orders for hazardous, toxic, and radiological waste (HTRW) work, and overseeing hazardous waste site investigations, feasibility studies, remedial design, or site cleanup construction.
Education: You must first meet the basic engineering requirement. This can be a bachelor's degree or higher in engineering from a qualifying program, such as one with an ABET-accredited program or with required calculus and advanced science courses. Other options include a current Engineer Intern or Engineer in Training registration, a Professional Engineer license, passing the Fundamentals of Engineering exam, 60 semester hours of required science and engineering courses, or a related science degree plus at least 1 year of professional engineering experience. Education cannot replace experience at this grade.
Licenses and certifications:
- Valid state driver's license, which you must be able to obtain and maintain
Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.
2 Resume and documents
Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.
3 Apply on USAJOBS
Closes in 4 days (November 9, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).
You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.
How they rate you: You will be rated on how well your resume, supporting documents, and questionnaire show you meet the qualifications. If you inflate your qualifications or experience, you may lose consideration, and incomplete or incorrect packages may be rated ineligible.
4 After you apply
In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.
For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.
If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.
Tips for this job:
- Your resume must be two pages or less and must show hours per week for each job, or your application may be marked incomplete.
- Describe your hazardous waste, remediation, and contract oversight work in detail, since education cannot replace the required experience.
- If you qualify through education, upload your transcript with your application or you will be rated ineligible.
