How they rate you: You are rated on how well you meet the qualifications, using the online questionnaire and your documents. Your RN experience is judged on five areas: Practice, Veteran/Patient Driven Care, Leadership, Professional Development, and Evidence-Based Practice/Research. Unclear or unsupported claims may not be credited, and errors or missing information may lower your rating.

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Describe your nursing and behavioral health experience clearly and specifically, since the agency verifies it.
  • If you are a current VA Albuquerque employee, submit your SF-50 or you will not get first consideration.
  • Claim veterans' preference in the questionnaire and attach your DD-214 if you qualify.
