Who can apply: The public, Career transition (CTAP, ICTAP, RPL).

Open to the public, but only U.S. citizens, nationals, or people who owe allegiance to the U.S. Current or former federal employees whose job was eliminated may get priority under CTAP or ICTAP, and veterans' preference applies.

Experience: You need at least 1 year of specialized experience that is equal in difficulty to the next lower grade, meaning GS-11 for GS-12 and GS-12 for GS-13. Examples include HR system analysis, HR information system design, and complex database data retrieval, and you must also have the 12-month SQL, web application, or SharePoint experience described in the announcement.

Education: Education cannot replace experience at this grade.

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 2 days (November 5, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: You will complete USA Hire competency assessments and must meet a cut score to be considered. Applications are rated Best Qualified, Highly Qualified, or Qualified, and your resume and documents are checked against your assessment answers. Overstating your experience or cheating on an assessment can lead to removal.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, a security clearance (Other), then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Clearly show at least 12 months of SQL, web application, or SharePoint experience on your resume, or you will be found ineligible.
  • List start and end dates in MM/YYYY format and hours per week for every job, or your experience may not get credit.
  • Finish the USA Hire assessment within its deadline after you apply, since you must meet the cut score to be considered.
