Who can apply: Internal to an agency, The public.

Open to U.S. citizens, nationals, and people who owe allegiance to the U.S. Also open to current federal employees of the hiring agency, and current VA Albuquerque employees get first consideration if they submit an SF-50.

Experience: Experience is matched to nurse grade levels, from Nurse I, Level I up to Nurse III, and is rated on five nursing areas: practice, Veteran-driven care, leadership, professional development, and evidence-based practice. For example, Nurse I, Level III needs 2 years of professional nursing experience, one year of which is at Nurse I, Level 2.

Education: You must be a graduate of an approved nursing school accredited by ACEN or CCNE, or meet a listed foreign or bridge-program option. Education level affects which grade you qualify for: an associate degree or diploma, a BSN, an MSN, or a doctorate each qualify at different levels. Foreign degrees are not counted as related degrees.

Licenses and certifications:

  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted RN registration in a U.S. state, territory, Puerto Rico, or D.C.

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 10 days (November 13, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: You are rated on how well you meet the qualifications, using your online questionnaire and documents, which will be verified. Be clear and specific, because the agency will not assume experience you do not describe. Missing or incomplete information may make you ineligible or lower your rating.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Make your resume long-form and specific, with dates and hours per week for each nursing role, since experience is verified.
  • Current VA Albuquerque employees must submit an SF-50 or they will not get first consideration.
  • If you claim veterans' preference, claim it in the questionnaire and attach your DD-214 and, if needed, an SF-15 with proof.
