Education: Education can qualify you instead of experience. Options include a four-year bachelor's or higher degree with a major in health or allied sciences such as biology, chemistry, or medical lab technology; a bachelor's degree with 30 semester hours of biology and chemistry (both required); or two years of graduate study toward a master's in a related health science field.
Licenses and certifications:
- Current histotechnologist (HTL) certification from the ASCP Board of Certification
Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

3 Apply on USAJOBS
Closes in 2 days (November 5, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).
This job will close once the VA receives 50 applications, which may happen before the closing date.
You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.
How they rate you: You are rated on how well you meet the qualifications, based on your online questionnaire and documents. Missing or unclear information can lower your rating or make you ineligible, and the VA may verify your experience and contact references.
4 After you apply
In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.
For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.
If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.
Tips for this job:
- Your resume must list the hours per week you worked in each job, with start and end month and year.
- Send a copy of your current, unexpired ASCP HTL certificate, since it is required.
- Apply before the closing date, because the job may close after 50 applications.
