Who can apply: The public.
Only U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, or people who owe allegiance to the U.S. can apply. Selection is also subject to restrictions from the Department of Defense referral system for displaced employees.
Experience: One year of specialized experience at the GS-5 level, which includes making, applying, changing, or removing casts; taking vital signs; and assisting providers during minor surgery. Paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work, counts.
Education: Half a year (9 semester hours) of graduate-level education in a field directly related to the job, such as kinesiology, health science, or orthopedic technology. You can also combine education and experience, but the two percentages must add up to at least 100%. Foreign education needs a credential evaluation or full U.S. credit.
Licenses and certifications:
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Red Cross or American Heart Association
Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.
2 Resume and documents
Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.
3 Apply on USAJOBS
Closes in 11 days (November 14, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).
You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.
How they rate you: Your full application package (resume, supporting documents, and questionnaire answers) is reviewed to see if you meet the qualifications. Inflated qualifications, missing information, or errors may lower your rating or remove you from consideration.
4 After you apply
In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.
For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.
If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, a security clearance (Secret), then the final offer with your start date.
Tips for this job:
- Keep your resume to two pages or less, and list hours per week for each job.
- If you qualify through education, include a copy of your transcript from an accredited school, or you may be rated ineligible.
- Describe your cast work, vital sign checks, and surgical assisting in plain words, because the agency will not assume what your resume means.
