1 Check you can apply You are here
Who can apply: The public.
Open to the public, but only U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, or people who owe allegiance to the U.S. can apply.
Experience: You need one year of specialized experience at the GS-5 level. Specialized experience means work that closely matches this job, such as using optometry equipment (like lensometers, tonometers, and visual field machines), doing basic eye tests, and entering data into electronic patient records.
Education: A half year (9 semester hours) of graduate education directly related to the job, such as optometry, can qualify you. You can also combine education and experience, but the two percentages must add up to at least 100%. Foreign education must be evaluated by an approved private organization or receive full credit at a U.S. accredited school.
Licenses and certifications:
- A job-related license or certification is required, and a copy must be submitted with your application. Certification from the American Board of Opticianry is highly preferred.
Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.
2 Resume and documents
Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.
3 Apply on USAJOBS
Closes in 7 days (November 10, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).
You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.
How they rate you: Your full application package (resume, supporting documents, and questionnaire answers) will be reviewed to see if you meet the listed qualifications. If you inflate your qualifications or experience, you may lose consideration, and missing or incomplete documents can make your application ineligible.
4 After you apply
In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.
For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.
If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, a security clearance (Secret), then the final offer with your start date.
Tips for this job:
- Keep your resume to two pages or less and make sure it clearly describes the specialized experience, or it will be removed.
- List the number of hours worked per week for each job on your resume, or your application may be marked incomplete.
- Upload a copy of your license or certification and your transcript if you use education, or you will be rated ineligible.
