Who can apply: The public.

Only U.S. citizens may apply. The job is open to the public, and you must show proof of U.S. citizenship.

Experience: One year of specialized experience, which the announcement says is typical of GS-5 work. Specialized experience includes taking medical and eye history, testing visual acuity, fitting and ordering eyeglasses, and operating specialized eye equipment.

Education: Half a year (9 semester hours) of graduate-level education directly related to the work, such as optometry, vision science, or optometric technology. You can also combine education and experience: divide your months of experience by 12, divide your graduate semester hours by 9, and add the two percentages. The total must be at least 100%. Education from foreign schools must be evaluated or fully credited by a U.S. accredited school.

Licenses and certifications:

  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Red Cross or American Heart Association

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 7 days (November 10, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: After the announcement closes, your resume, supporting documents, and questionnaire answers will be reviewed to see if you meet the qualification requirements. If the agency finds you have inflated your experience, you may lose consideration; missing or incomplete documents may make your application ineligible.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, a security clearance (Secret), then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Send your college transcripts with your application if you qualify through education, or you will be rated ineligible.
  • Keep your resume to two pages or less and list the hours per week for each job.
  • Describe your eye care tasks in plain words, such as taking medical history or fitting eyeglasses, and avoid acronyms.
