1 Check you can apply You are here

Who can apply: The public, Career transition (CTAP, ICTAP, RPL).

Only U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, or people who owe allegiance to the U.S. can apply. Displaced federal employees under CTAP, ICTAP, or RPL get selection priority, and the agency is using direct-hire authority.

Experience: For GS-7, you need 1 year of specialized experience at about the GS-5 level, such as health care administration, medical staff or credentialing work, medical terminology, or database work. For GS-9, you need 1 year of specialized experience at about the GS-7 level, and you must also meet an Individual Occupational Requirement that is checked on your resume.

Education: Education can qualify you in place of experience. For GS-7, you need 1 full year of graduate education or superior academic achievement in hospital administration, public health administration, or a related field such as business or public administration with health care administration courses. For GS-9, you need a master's or equivalent graduate degree, or 2 full years of progressively higher graduate education, in hospital or public health administration. You can also combine education and experience.

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes tomorrow (November 4, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: You are rated on your application materials, your questionnaire answers, and a USA Hire online assessment that measures nine general skills, such as attention to detail, teamwork, and stress tolerance. You must meet the assessment cut score to be considered, and you can be removed for overstating your experience or for cheating on the assessment.

Apply on USAJOBS ↗
4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • List job title, duties, month and year dates, and hours per week for every job on your resume, and keep it to 2 pages.
  • If you use education to qualify, attach a transcript. Foreign degrees also need a Certificate of Foreign Equivalency.
  • Complete the USA Hire online assessment on time, because you must meet the cut score to be considered.
