Who can apply: The public.
Open to the public, but the agency clarifies that only U.S. citizens may apply. You must also be determined suitable for federal employment.
Experience: You need at least 1 year of specialized experience at or equivalent to NH-2 (GS-11) in federal service, or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. The experience must include ship or submarine design, materials, or naval architecture; engineering; shipbuilding, maintenance, or overhaul practices; and knowledge of Navy organization and technical authority.
Education: A professional engineering degree from an ABET-accredited program, or a degree with enough engineering and science courses under OPM standards. Current Engineer Intern (EI), Engineer in Training (EIT), or Professional Engineer (PE) registration also qualifies, as does passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam. A bachelor's degree in a related science field can qualify with at least 1 year of professional engineering experience.
Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.
2 Resume and documents
Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.
3 Apply on USAJOBS
Closes in 3 days (November 6, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).
You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.
How they rate you: Human Resources reviews your resume against the listed qualifications and rates you on the information provided. Qualified applicants are referred to the hiring manager, who may hold interviews. Applicants who inflate their qualifications, submit incomplete packages, or send illegible resumes may be rated ineligible.
4 After you apply
In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.
For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.
If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, a security clearance (Secret), then the final offer with your start date.
Tips for this job:
- Your resume must be no more than 2 pages and must show dates by month and year, plus hours per week for part-time work.
- If you use education to qualify, include transcripts or a course list showing credit hours, since the announcement requires proof.
- Attach a copy of any EI, EIT, PE, or FE document you list, because the announcement says claimed credentials must be submitted.
