Who can apply: The public.
Only U.S. citizens or U.S. nationals can apply. No prior federal experience is required.
Experience: For the GS-13 level, you need at least 1 year of experience at the GS-12 level, meeting 2 of 3 areas: planning and tracking engineering projects, preparing project requirements and monitoring awards, or writing technical reports and giving briefings. For the GS-12 level, you need at least 1 year of similar experience at the GS-11 level.
Education: A bachelor's degree in engineering from a program accredited by ABET can qualify you. You can also qualify with enough engineering and math coursework, meaning calculus and at least five of seven listed engineering science areas. Other options include an engineering license or registration (EI, EIT, or PE), passing the Fundamentals of Engineering exam, 60 semester hours of science and engineering courses, or a related science degree plus 1 year of professional engineering experience.
Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.
2 Resume and documents

3 Apply on USAJOBS
Closes in 7 days (November 4, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).
This job will close when 250 applications are received, which may be before the closing date of 11/04/2026.
You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.
How they rate you: You are rated on a USA Hire online assessment with a cut score, an application questionnaire, your application materials, and a minimum qualification review. If you do not meet the cut score or do not finish the assessment, you will not be considered. Veterans' preference and category rating do not apply under this direct-hire process.
4 After you apply
In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.
For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.
If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.
Tips for this job:
- Your resume must list dates, hours per week, and salary for each job, as the announcement requires.
- Include unofficial transcripts with your application, because education is used to meet the requirements.
- Apply early, because the job may close after 250 applications, before the November 4, 2026 deadline.
