Who can apply: The public.

The job is open to the public, but only U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, or people who owe allegiance to the U.S. You must prove U.S. citizenship.

Experience: For GS-12, you need 2 or more years of professional legal experience. For GS-13, you need 2 or more years of experience with more independent and complex work. Examples include researching legal issues, drafting legal documents, advising clients, and supporting litigation. Paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work, can count.

Education: You must have a law degree (LL.B. or J.D.) from a law school accredited by the American Bar Association (ABA). An LL.M. degree, or graduating in the top 25% of your class from an ABA-accredited law school, can substitute for one year of the required experience.

Licenses and certifications:

  • Active member in good standing of a state, territory, D.C., or Puerto Rico bar (copy required)

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 13 days (November 16, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: Applicants are rated on technical legal knowledge, litigation representation and advocacy, and communication and teamwork. If your qualifications or experience are found to be inflated, you may lose consideration; missing documents can make your application incomplete.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Keep your resume to two pages or less, or it will be removed from consideration.
  • Get your bar good-standing certificate and notarized fitness statement dated within 3 months of submitting.
  • Do not forget the sworn fitness-to-practice statement; it is required even if your fitness has never been challenged.
