Who can apply: The public.

Open to the public. You must be a U.S. citizen, national, or person who owes allegiance to the United States.

Education: You must have a law degree (Juris Doctor or equivalent) from a law school accredited by the American Bar Association, or from a school with other accreditation that lets graduates sit for a state bar exam. Recent law school graduates, and attorneys with less than one year of experience as a licensed attorney, must also show superior law student work to qualify at the GS-11 level. Examples include ranking in the top third of the class, work on a law review, moot court, full-time legal aid work, significant summer clerk experience, or an Office of Chief Counsel or DHS externship.

Licenses and certifications:

  • Active membership in good standing in the bar of a U.S. state, territory, D.C., or Puerto Rico

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 56 days (December 29, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: You are rated on your education, experience, legal research and writing ability, and interview performance. Interviews may include a personal interview and a writing exercise. Missing required information may result in an ineligible rating or a lower overall rating.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Include hours worked per week and exact dates (MM/DD/YY) for every job on your resume, since these are required.
  • Email your full package to OCCSANDIEGOMGMT@CBP.DHS.GOV with 'Vacancy CC/27-06 San Diego, California' in the subject line; fax, mail, and USAJOBS uploads are not accepted.
  • Prepare a strong writing sample of up to five pages, because writing ability is part of the rating.
