Who can apply: The public.
Only U.S. citizens and nationals who permanently live within the defined local commuting area of one of the field offices can apply. This is a Field Unit Local Hiring job, so veterans' preference and standard ranking do not apply.
Experience: For the lower level, you need one year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-5, such as helping manage public grazing lands or collecting range monitoring field data. For the higher level, you need one year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-7, such as helping write rangeland management plans. Your resume must state full-time or part-time and hours per week for each job.
Education: A degree in range management or a related field that includes at least 42 semester hours in plant, animal, and soil sciences and natural resources management, with at least 18 hours in range management. Graduate education can also qualify, and a bachelor's degree with strong grades, class standing, or honor society membership can qualify at the lower level. Transcripts are required if you use education.
Licenses and certifications:
- Valid driver's license that you must keep throughout employment
Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.
2 Resume and documents
Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.
3 Apply on USAJOBS
Closes in 27 days (November 30, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).
You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.
How they rate you: Human Resources checks whether you meet the minimum qualifications and eligibility rules. Applicants who qualify may be referred to the hiring official without a competitive ranking. Incomplete packages, resumes longer than two pages, and attachments added as resume pages will not be reviewed.
4 After you apply
In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.
For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.
If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.
Tips for this job:
- Keep your resume to two single-sided pages and include month and year dates and hours per week for each job.
- Include proof of residence within the defined distance of the field office, since an SF-50 will not be accepted for this.
- Send transcripts with your application if you use education to qualify, including both undergraduate and graduate transcripts.
